Apr 24, Kathmandu- There is a budget shortage for medical treatment in Bardiya Prison. The problem in treatment is due to the lack of medical treatment expenses according to the number of prisoners in the prison.
Prisoners in Bardiya Prison say that there was even a shortage of Citalopram by the end of the fiscal year. Harikrishna Bhujel, the head of internal administration of the prison, said that infectious diseases spread quickly because there are more prisoners than capacity.
“Prisoners do not even get to sleep properly. That is why they get sick a lot,” he said. “The prison has more prisoners than its capacity, that is why many get sick during the summer, and the government has not sent medicine according to the number, which has caused problems.” If prisoners in the prison have high fever or diarrhea, they have to use saline water and get injections. Ahab Chakra Bahadur Singh, who works in the prison, said that since the cost is expensive, even if they have a simple illness, they have to go to the hospital.
Bardiya Prison receives about four hundred thousand rupees every year. Bardiya Prison Chief Nar Bahadur Sarki said that more than one million rupees are spent to meet the demand. He informed that he has sent a letter to the department demanding insufficient funds for medical treatment.
