May 16, Kathmandu- Valeria Marquez, a 23-year-old Mexican beauty influencer known for her makeup videos, was shot and killed during a Tiktok live stream in a beauty salon where she worked in Zapopan, Jalisco.

The incident has shocked a country already grappling with high levels of gender-based violence. Authorities are investigating the killing as femicide, defined in Mexico as the murder of a woman due to her gender, often involving degrading violence or a personal relationship with the perpetrator. The Jalisco state prosecutor confirmed the investigation but has not yet named a suspect.
