Romania’s Liberal Mayor Wins Presidency as Election Results Roll In from Portugal and Poland

It has been a whirlwind night in European politics, with three significant elections unfolding and yielding one confirmed result alongside two indicative exit polls. The most prominent outcome came from Romania, where liberal Bucharest Mayor Nicușor Dan secured the presidency, defeating nationalist candidate George Simion. Although exit polls initially showed Dan in the lead, Simion prematurely declared victory, only for the official count to confirm Dan’s win. In his address to supporters, Dan declared, “Victory is yours.” Meanwhile, in Poland’s presidential election, an exit poll from Polish television suggested a tight race, with Warsaw’s liberal Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski receiving 30.8% of the vote, narrowly ahead of national-conservative historian Karol Nawrocki, who garnered 29.1%.
