May 20, Kathmandu- Since President Donald Trump took office for his second term on January 20, 2025, a total of 126 Nepalese nationals have been deported from the United States. The deportations occurred between January 20 and May 19, 2025, on charges related to violations of US immigration laws.
According to officials from the Immigration Office, the Trump administration has deported an average of more than 30 Nepalese individuals per month during this period, marking a significant increase compared to the previous year. Senior Immigration Officer Neupane stated, “In the past four months, 126 Nepalese have been deported from the US.” He added that two Nepalese were deported on Monday, May 8, and three were deported on May 13.
The US Embassy in Kathmandu informs the Immigration Office about deportees a day before their return to Kathmandu, after which they are handed over to Nepal Police at Tribhuvan International Airport. Most of those deported have been in the country illegally, prompting police to conduct thorough inquiries, especially regarding human smugglers responsible for sending Nepalese nationals to the US.
The US government has accused these individuals of entering the country illegally, overstaying visas, and residing without proper documentation. During his presidential campaign, Trump announced a crackdown on illegal immigration and signed an executive order aimed at deporting undocumented immigrants. Subsequently, the US released a list of 1,445,549 individuals, including 1,365 Nepalese, targeted for deportation on charges of illegal residence.
In 2024, the US deported 35 Nepalese nationals. Notably, the number of Nepalis deported has remained relatively consistent, with similar figures observed during President Joe Biden’s tenure. The current deportation figures reflect ongoing efforts by the Trump administration to enforce stricter immigration policies.
