May 31, Kathmandu- Due to incessant rainfall since this morning, the East-West Highway has been completely blocked after the diversion at Kalikhola in Mechinagar Municipality-6 of Jhapa was washed away.
The diversion, which is under construction under the Asian Highway, was washed away by the flood that accompanied the rain, causing complete disruption to vehicle movement, informed Deputy Superintendent of Police Khagendra Bahadur Khadka, Information Officer at the District Police Office, Jhapa.
He said that an alternative route is being used after the flood washed away the road along with the diversion. An alternative route has been used for movement, going west of the same place via Kalikhola to Shantigaun Ward Office and reaching Kakarbhitta Bus Park. It is said that coordination is being done with the concerned bodies for the construction of the road.
Meanwhile, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has reported through mobile SMS that heavy rainfall has been measured in many places in Ilam, Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari and Dhankuta.
Due to the expected further rainfall, flooding is possible in Mechi, Biring, Ninda, Kankai, Chisangkhola, Mawa-Ratuwa, Lohandra, Bakraha, Nunkhola and other small rivers, and a request has been made to adopt high alert until this afternoon.
