May 31, Kathmandu- Since the inception of a four-year B.A. program from the academic year 2076/077 B.S. under the faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Tribhuvan University has leapt a step forward in the field of humanities and social sciences. As a student, upon summarizing the course, I find it brilliantly prepared and the syllabus was enthusiastically made. Let us have a glimpse that the author's supposition is gonna impress all passionate scholars.
The first impressive thing lies in the project work that takes the form of a report, each carrying 25-30 marks as an internal evaluation. This develops the habit of research, self-study, and the need for a mentor or supervisor to accomplish any project work. It is an evident fact that when 20 reports are prepared for a total of 20 subjects during the four year program, then the student will be a junior scientist of the field, which he has taken as the course of study even for subjects of literature and linguistics.
Now, let us look at the failures. The major failure that is evidently seen in the Nepalese education system at university level is the attendance of students. This is mostly seen in the case of government colleges. It’s true that there are a lot of financially challenged students and job holder students who fail to attend class. And it needs a severe remedy to bring all students in class. This has created a hindrance in the teaching-learning process. Similarly, the merit that we had talked about project work, which makes future scientists ready, is not seriously implemented and most of the reports are plagiarised, which is neither taken seriously by the supervisor nor by the university with effective measures.
Now, let us see what can be done to make this 4-year program more elegant. Firstly, we need to introduce research methodology in the very first year of the course across all disciplines through introduction and application. This will enable students to be able to know, understand, prepare, seek guidance and solve a particular problem based on research-oriented tasks, which, when then takes the form of a report to be evaluated internally by the college or by university, would aid to the overall development of a particular subject. Similarly, plagiarism should be avoided and monitored strictly so that each student can put their effort towards their work to make it a genuine contribution to the field, university, nation and global body of research.
