Jun 02, Kathmandu - Incessant rains have caused major flooding in the Indian state of Sikkim, which borders Nepal on its east. The Teesta river has risen by 35-40 feet, causing extensive damage to roads and bridges.
Three people were killed when a landslide hit an army camp in Sikkim at 7 pm on Sunday following heavy rains. Six soldiers are still missing. The army said in a statement on Monday.
News agency PTI, citing a defence official, said four people were rescued. They suffered minor injuries. Rescue operations are underway to find the missing soldiers. On the other hand, more than a thousand tourists who were stranded in Lachen and Lachung in Sikkim for four days have been evacuated.
The northeastern states, including Sikkim, have been receiving continuous heavy rains for the last four days. So far, 37 people have died in rain, floods and landslides.
Of these, 10 have died in Assam, 9 in Arunachal Pradesh, 5 in Mizoram and 6 in Meghalaya.
In October 2023, 18 people were killed when the Teesta river flash flood occurred during heavy rains in Sikkim. At least 98 people were missing, including 22 soldiers. Many of them are still missing.
Soldiers from the Indian Army, Air Force and Assam Rifles have been deployed for relief and rescue in the northeastern states of India. More than 3.64 lakh people have been affected by the floods in Assam. Ten major rivers, including the Brahmaputra and the Barak, are flowing above the danger mark.
More than 19,000 people have been affected by the floods in Manipur. 3,365 houses have been damaged.
More than 10,000 people have been affected by the floods in Tripura. All schools in Mizoram's capital Aizawl have been ordered to remain closed on June 2 due to heavy rains. Since May 30, 211 landslides have occurred in Mizoram.
Meanwhile, rain warnings have been issued in 30 districts of Rajasthan and 50 districts of Madhya Pradesh. A 60-year-old woman died when a house collapsed due to storm and rain in Bihar's Vaishali district on Sunday evening. Storm and rain alerts have been issued in 9 districts of the state.
