Nepali Congress Alleges Embezzlement Of Flood Relief Funds In Kalikot District

Jun 07, Kathmandu - The Nepali Congress has expressed its objection after the money collected in the name of flood and landslide victims in Narharinath Rural Municipality of Kalikot district was embezzled.

After the money given by Indreni for flood and landslide victims disappeared from the account of the municipality chairman, the Nepali Congress Kalikot has warned of action if the money is not distributed.

Indreni Television Program and Indreni Samaj had handed over Rs. 543,050 to the Rural Municipality Chairman Nagendra Bista on Magh 20, 2080 BS for the flood and landslide victims.

The relief has not yet reached the actual victims. The flood and landslide that occurred in 2077-078 BS had caused huge financial losses in Ward No. 5, 6 and 9 of Narharinath Rural Municipality. Krishna Kandel, the director of the Indreni Program in Kathmandu, had collected the relief and handed over the check to Chairman Bista through a public program.

Bista is the elected rural municipality chairman from the Nepali Congress. He is in charge of party secretary of Nepali Congress Kalikot. The party has warned that action will be taken because the party has given instructions to distribute the relief money for a long time but failed to do so.

Nepali Congress District Committee Kalikot has warned of action against those who have received relief from flood and landslide victims after they ignored the party's repeated instructions, said Vice President Min Bahadur Bogati.

"The party secretary and rural municipality chairperson were not ready to accept the repeated instructions," said a local Congress leader. "The chairperson has issued a warning through social media."

Spokesperson of the rural municipality and ward chairperson of ward no. 9, Pradeep Bohora, said that Indreni had collected a total of Rs 543,050 in relief money for the families who lost their lives, lost their homes and were displaced due to the floods and landslides. According to him, Indreni's operator Kandel said that he has been raising the issue of the amount transferred to the rural municipality chairperson, vice-chairperson and all nine ward chairpersons so far.

"During the transfer of the money, there was a discussion about whether to deposit it in the rural municipality's account. However, since the process of depositing the money in the rural municipality's account is very complicated and making payments based on income, a check was cut and handed over in the name of chairperson Bista", he said, "Where is the check after the check is handed over? We do not know how it was exchanged?"
