California Neurologist Files Lawsuit Against Thai Restaurant Over Spicy Food Incident

Jun 07, Kathmandu - A female doctor in California, USA, has filed a lawsuit against a local Thai restaurant. Dr. Harjasleen Walia, a neurologist from San Jose, has filed a lawsuit against the restaurant, alleging that the restaurant served extremely spicy and bitter food that left her with a sore throat.

According to the news, in 2023, she went to the restaurant and ordered a dish called 'Dragon Balls'. At that time, she requested the waitress to reduce the spice in the food, and the waitress agreed to her request.

But even though she asked for less piro and spice, the restaurant ignored her request. So, after taking the first bite, the piro started burning her mouth, tongue and throat. The inside of her nose also burned, and tears and water ran from her nose. She started coughing constantly.

According to Walia, the excessive piro caused her chemical burns. She has also suffered permanent damage to her larynx, esophagus and nose. She has lost her voice and has difficulty speaking.

After taking the first bite, she felt a burning sensation in her mouth, so she asked the restaurant staff for milk or ice cream. But the restaurant did not provide her with anything to relieve the burning sensation. She later drank coconut water and water, but the burning sensation did not subside.

In her lawsuit, she said that such a spicy food is not suitable for the general public and that the restaurant did not consult with health authorities or emergency services.

The restaurant, on the other hand, has denied the allegations. According to a restaurant representative, it was not possible to reduce the heat and spice because the meatballs were mixed with chili peppers. He also claimed that no one else has complained about unbearable heat so far.
