First Gender Affirming Surgery Performed In Nepal For The First Time

Jun 08, Kathmandu - For the first time in Nepal, a gender affirming surgery has been performed. The Department of Plastic Surgery at TU Teaching Hospital has stated that the first gender affirming surgery has been performed in Nepal.

Spokesperson of TU Teaching Hospital, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gopal Sedhai, informed that, in addition to various facial and breast surgeries, gender affirming surgery (male to female) was performed for the first time in Nepal.

A statement issued by spokesperson Sedhai said, "In this sex change operation performed on a 25-year-old transgender resident of Janakpur, female genitalia was reconstructed using the required amount of male genital tissue, and it is expected to help the person achieve their desired gender identity."

The hospital has stated that the operation, led by foreign plastic surgeon Dr. Alireza Hamidian Jahromi and coordinated by Plastic Surgery Department Head Prof. Dr. Jayan Man Shrestha, was attended by all the plastic surgeons of the department Prof. Dr. Ishwar Lohani, Dr. Sangam Rayamajhi, Dr. Sameet Sharma, Dr. Bikesh Rajbhandari, Dr. Himalaya Niraula and resident doctors Dr. Anup Thapa, Dr. Sudip Pandit, Dr. Ashish Adhikari, Dr. Novel, Dr. Isha, Dr. Asbin. Similarly, the team of Dr. Megha Koirala and Dr. Pankaj Joshi assisted in anesthesia.

Dr. Jayan Man Shrestha informed that from now on, a gender identification clinic will be established at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital and such services will be provided regularly.
