Jun 19, Kathmandu - Thai Prime Minister Phatthana Shinawatra's coalition government is on the verge of collapse after his conversation with former Cambodian leader Hun Sen about the border dispute was made public.
The public is expressing outrage over the phone call. The main coalition partner party has announced that it will leave the government.
She addressed Hun Sen as "uncle" in the phone call. The audio also includes a statement calling for the dismissal of a Thai military commander. Under pressure, Petchtontarn apologized for the leaked audio on Thursday.
Pheu Thai Party suffered a major setback on Wednesday when Bhumjaithai, the second-largest party in Petchton's coalition government, quit. Petchton's coalition now has a slim majority. He could lose his majority if more coalition partners decide to leave the government. The other two coalition partners said they would discuss the issue after Thursday.
Critics have said it is offensive that Petty Officers have addressed Hun Sen as "uncle" and promised to meet his demands. They have accused Petty Officers of seeking to weaken the country's politically influential military.
In a phone call, she told Hun Sen that the Thai military commander was trying to make himself look good by increasing border tensions and had made objectionable remarks.
The Shinawatra family and Cambodia's Hun Sen family are said to have had friendly relations for decades. Hun Sen and Phatthanathan's father, former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, consider each other brothers.
Thai leader Phatthana has defended the phone call as a normal 'way of communication'. Opposition leaders have called for her resignation.
Hun Sen said he gave the audio clip to 80 leaders and that one of them leaked it. He later posted the entire 17-minute recording on Facebook.
