Jun 26, Kathmandu - More than 30,000 Afghan refugees returned home from Iran in a single day after crossing the Islam Qala border in western Herat, local officials said on Wednesday.
Maulvi Ahmadullah Muttaqi, provincial director of the Information and Culture Department, said they were provided with all necessary supplies, including water, food and immediate medical assistance.
Afghanistan has opened two major borders with Iran, one in western Herat province and the other in Nimroz province, and the number of refugees returning from both borders has recently increased.
An estimated 2,000 to 3,000 individuals and about 300 families are returning to Afghanistan every day through the Pul-e Abrishm border crossing in Nimroz province, the provincial director of refugees and repatriation said.
Of the estimated 7 million Afghan refugees, the majority are undocumented migrants, currently living abroad, with the largest numbers in Iran and Pakistan.
