Education Committee meeting postponed as no agreement was reached on controversial issues

Jun 26, Kathmandu - The meeting of the Education, Science and Technology Committee under the House of Representatives has been postponed by two hours. The meeting, which was called for 1 pm today, has been postponed to 3 pm, informed Chairman Ammar Bahadur Thapa. The committee has not been able to reach an agreement on the management and operation of private schools, as well as the demands of ECD and teachers.

The meeting has been postponed in an attempt to reach a consensus on the same controversial issue. Bhapati Thapa informed that the committee is preparing to pass the bill by Asad 13 and send it to the House of Representatives. He said that some of the remaining issues in the bill can be resolved by holding a meeting today and tomorrow.

The Consultation Coordination Subcommittee met throughout the day on Wednesday to reach a consensus on the controversial issues of the bill, but no consensus could be reached. The leaders have informed that the controversial issues have been narrowed down.

Although the government had reached an agreement with the Teachers' Federation on April 17 to issue the Act by June 15, the committee has not yet been able to send it to the House of Representatives.

After teachers staged an academic strike from Chaitra 20 to 29 demanding the Act, an agreement was reached with the government on Baisakh 17 to issue the Act by Asadha 15.
