Today is National Paddy Day: President plants paddy at Sheetal Niwas

Jun 29, Kathmandu - A plantation drive was organized at the President’s residence to mark Paddy Day, with President Ram Chandra Poudel and First Lady Sabita Poudel participating in the event. The plantation initiative was organized by the President's Office.

Inaugurating the drive, President Poudel emphasized the importance of modernizing agriculture and promoting it as a commercial activity. He stated that his symbolic participation aimed to encourage respect for all types of labor, including agriculture and rice production. He also highlighted that farmers, who rely on agriculture and lead in making it a main source of employment, should be honored as food donors.

This year marks the 22nd National Rice Day and Planting Festival 2082, celebrated nationwide under the slogan 'Intensification in Rice Crops: Food Security and Self-Reliance.' Nepal began observing Rice Day in 2062 BS after 43 countries worldwide declared the International Rice Year by the United Nations in 2061 BS. The celebration was institutionalized through a ministerial decision on 29 Mangsir 2061 BS.

Additionally, April 15, known as Asadha 15 in Nepali society, is celebrated as a festival of eating curd and yogurt, especially by those engaged in professions outside agriculture.

The Constitution of Nepal guarantees the right to food as a fundamental right, ensuring protection for citizens from situations where life is at risk due to food scarcity.
