Jul 04, Kathmandu - CNN reported that Russia has launched its largest-ever attack on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv. The Ukrainian sky was still shrouded in black smoke this morning after Russia's fierce overnight assault.
According to Ukrainian authorities, a thick layer of smoke hung over Kyiv on Friday morning. Russia launched drones and missiles in almost all the districts of the capital.
The attack came just hours after a phone call between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which Trump expressed disappointment that Putin had not shown any willingness to end the war in Ukraine.
Urban areas were targeted in the night-time attack. According to CNN, where 539 drones and 11 cruise and ballistic missiles were shot. The Ukrainian Air Force claimed that its air defense system destroyed 476 of the drones shot down by Russia.
According to Ukraine's emergency services, the attack caused fires in buildings and structures. Several buildings were also partially damaged. The railway line in Kyiv was also damaged.
At least 23 people are reported to have been injured in the attack. Thousands of people took shelter in metro stations and underground parking lots as the sound of the explosions continued. Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described it as one of the most terrifying nights. President Zelensky also called it the biggest airstrike the country has ever seen.
According to CNN, Russia launched more than 330 missiles, including about 80 ballistic missiles, 5,000 drones, and 5,000 gliding bombs, against Ukraine in June alone.
Russia has become more aggressive after the deputy commander of the Russian Navy was killed in fighting with Ukraine in the Kursk region on Thursday. It is also reported that a woman in Russia was killed in a Ukrainian drone attack.
