Jul 04, Kathmandu - At least six people were killed and six others injured when a five-story building collapsed in Pakistan on Friday.
The incident took place shortly after 10 a.m. local time in the Lyari area of Karachi. Lyari is a neighborhood once plagued by gang violence and is considered one of the most dangerous areas in Pakistan.
According to Shankar Kamho, 30, a resident of the building, about 20 families were living in the building.
“I got the news that the building was going to collapse from my wife’s phone,” he told AFP. “I told her to get out immediately.”
He said that when he told a neighbor about the incident, he said the building was strong and he took his daughter to a safe place, but about 20 minutes later, the building completely collapsed.”
Arif Aziz, a senior local police officer, told AFP that six bodies had been recovered and six injured people had been rescued.
Up to 100 people were living in the building, but some were out on work.
“At least eight to 10 people may still be trapped,” Saad Edhi of the Edhi Welfare Foundation, which is involved in the rescue operation, told AFP.
He also confirmed that the death toll had risen to six.
At least five excavators and nearby residents helped with the rescue.
In June 2020, at least 18 people died when a residential building containing about 40 apartments collapsed in the same area of the city.
Hundreds of people die every year in Pakistan when roofs and buildings collapse due to poor safety standards and poor construction materials.
