Nepali Congress Leader Shashank Koirala Warns of Deepening Party Split, Calls for Unity

Jun 14, Kathmandu - Senior Nepali Congress leader Shashank Koirala expressed deep concern over the ongoing division within the party, describing it as "extremely unfortunate." Addressing a gathering of the party's intra-group faction in Biratnagar, Koirala emphasized that the party is practically fractured and stressed the importance of uniting to safeguard its historical legacy and institutional achievements.

Koirala highlighted the need for party leaders and activists to stand together in support of democratic values and to push for meaningful change. Targeting current President Gagan Thapa, he warned that it is impossible for the party to operate effectively with only a few seasoned leaders remaining outside the fold, urging all members to come together and move forward collectively.

He described the current state of the party—built through long struggles and sacrifices—as distressing, asserting that the party has not actually disintegrated from within but has been divided due to external influences. Accusing the Supreme Court and Election Commission of flawed decisions, Koirala blamed these institutions for the party’s current split.

Stressing that unity is the most urgent priority in the present circumstances, Koirala said a strong Nepali Congress is essential for national development. He called on all leaders to shed past differences and foster an environment of unity to secure a bright future for the party and steer the country in the right direction.
