UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak Resigns Amid Leadership Challenges

Jun 21, Kathmandu - UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced his resignation, stepping down from his position after facing intense pressure and leadership challenges within his Conservative Party.

Speaking emotionally outside 10 Downing Street, Sunak expressed his resolve to dedicate time to what he considers the "most important work" of his life. "I will try to be the best husband to my wife, Akshata, who has stood by me through thick and thin. I also aim to be the best father to my wonderful children, who are my pride and joy," he said.

Sunak assumed office in 2024, leading the UK with a significant majority. However, over the past two years, internal conflicts, policy disputes, scandals, and declining popularity weakened his leadership. Recently, nearly a quarter of his party's MPs openly called for his resignation.

The pressure mounted further last week when Andy Burnham, an influential Labour leader and former Mayor of Greater Manchester, won the recent 'Makerfield' by-election. Burnham is now seen as the frontrunner to succeed Sunak as the UK's next Prime Minister and Labour Party leader.

Sunak is expected to serve as caretaker Prime Minister until a new leader is chosen, with nominations opening on July 9 and a new Prime Minister expected to be appointed by September. If Andy Burnham runs unopposed, he could take office within July.
