Ultimatum to Squatters to Vacate Holding Center within 5 Days

Jun 23, Kathmandu - The Bagmati Civilization Integrated Development Committee has issued a five-day ultimatum for homeless and landless families residing in holding centers in Kirtipur to vacate the premises. The notice comes as part of a government-led effort to clear riverbank settlements ahead of the monsoon season.

Starting from Monday through Friday, families are urged to self-manage and evacuate the holding center to ensure safety amid the approaching rainy season. According to Machakaji Maharjan, Project Director of the committee, prolonged stay at the holding centers has disrupted residents’ daily lives and is only meant for temporary accommodation.

“People living in the centers have been unable to work, and their lives have become chaotic. Since the purpose is only temporary, we are seeking their relocation,” Maharjan explained. “With the monsoon already underway and the holding center located near the riverbank in Kirtipur, there is a significant risk of flooding and inundation during heavy rains. To prevent humanitarian crises and ensure safety, we must relocate these families within five days.”

The government has announced a relief and rehabilitation package for displaced families. The committee stated that under this program, families residing inside and outside the holding centers will receive financial aid to find new housing.

A one-time reinstallation grant of NPR 25,000 per family has been approved, with funds already allocated in the current fiscal year's budget. The money must be disbursed and utilized between Asadha 15 and Asadha 20, according to legal deadlines.

Additionally, verified homeless families will receive monthly rent assistance of NPR 15,000 to help secure temporary accommodation until their permanent settlement is arranged. The Land Commission will continue providing this support until a final land settlement is reached, emphasizing that the government’s goal is not to make families homeless.

Currently, 388 families across six holding centers in the Kathmandu Valley are affected. No relief funds have been disbursed to date.

To expedite aid distribution, the committee has deployed three to four specialized teams. Displaced families are required to submit applications with their bank account details. Once applications and account information are received, funds will be transferred directly via bank transfer.
