Heatwave in Western Europe Claims Nearly 1,000 Lives, Mostly Seniors

Jun 28, Kathmandu - A severe heatwave across a large part of Western Europe has resulted in approximately 1,000 additional deaths, surpassing previous records for the same period, according to Public Health France. The agency noted that the majority of these fatalities—around 85%—were among individuals aged 65 and above, with Paris and its surrounding suburbs being the most affected.

Many deaths occurred while residents were at home, highlighting the urgent need for supportive measures for vulnerable populations, especially those living alone or in densely urban areas. Health authorities warn that these figures are preliminary and the actual death toll could be even higher. Following days of temperatures exceeding 40°C in several regions, France experienced a slight dip in heat on Sunday, but the impact of the heatwave continues to be a significant concern.
