Aug 11, Kathmandu - Indian cricketer Abhishek Porel, a key player for Delhi Capitals in the IPL and hailing from Bengal, has been arrested on charges of rape. The arrest was made on Tuesday in Kolkata.
According to a police complaint filed by a medical student in June, Porel faces allegations of rape, criminal intimidation, and other charges. The woman alleged she had been in a relationship with the cricketer for the past three years, with tensions rising last year and him allegedly distancing himself.
The 23-year-old wicketkeeper-batter has played 116 matches for Bengal and 35 matches in the IPL for Delhi Capitals, who had retained him for ₹4 crore. Porel has previously toured England and Australia with India ‘A’ team and debuted in first-class cricket in 2021-22 from Bengal.
The case was pending before the Calcutta High Court, which ordered his arrest on July 20 and also directed authorities to seize his electronic devices. Porel has denied all allegations, asserting his innocence.
According to the complainant, Porel had promised to marry her, but now he is reportedly unwilling to proceed with the marriage. The woman has also accused him of physical assault and criminal intimidation.
The complaint further claims that Porel’s relationship with the woman had been ongoing for three years, with disagreements starting last year. She alleges that he had engaged in physical relations under the promise of marriage, which he now refuses to fulfill.
The incident was registered at Mogra Police Station on June 23, 2026.
