Aug 18, Kathmandu - The government has issued a strict directive requiring all e-commerce operators conducting business through social media platforms such as Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, as well as various apps and websites, to register with the relevant department.
The Department of Commerce, Supplies, and Consumer Protection issued an urgent notice warning that failure to register as per existing laws will result in severe legal action.
Who Must Register?
According to the department, all businesses engaged in trading goods or services using websites, mobile apps, software, internet, intranet, or social media marketplaces fall under the definition of e-commerce. This includes not only the sale of goods but also service providers in sectors such as electricity, water, telecommunication, information technology, health, education, consultancy, transportation, tourism, entertainment, banking, insurance, legal, and engineering services.
In recent times, the department has observed a surge in complaints about consumer confusion, fraud, and the sale of substandard goods or services through digital payments and online transactions.
The department has warned that operating without registration or through illegal electronic platforms, ignoring legal requirements, will lead to strict legal action under the E-Commerce Act, 2081, and other applicable laws.
Consumers are also advised to make purchases only from officially registered portals to ensure safety and quality.
