Kathmandu and Dang Witness Heartbreaking Losses Following Violent Crime

Aug 24, Kathmandu - The mother of a young man who was murdered in Kathmandu has died of grief in Dang district. The incident began with the brutal killing of 22-year-old Basanta Kalathoki inside 'Valley Boys Hostel' in Kathmandu’s Shankhamul area, where he was beaten and stabbed with a sharp weapon on Friday.

Following the tragic news, Basanta’s mother, 38-year-old Bina Kalathoki, was overwhelmed by grief upon hearing about her son’s death. She was found dead at her home in Haridwar, Ghorahi Sub-Metropolitan City, on Saturday afternoon around 3 PM, according to District Police Chief SP Deepak Shrestha.

A police team, led by Assistant Sub-Inspector Amar Gaire from the Chaughera Police Post and accompanied by five officers from the District Police Office Ghorahi, rushed to the scene after receiving the report. They completed the necessary legal procedures and took Bina’s body for post-mortem at Rapti Health Science Academy, where it is currently kept in the mortuary awaiting further investigation.

According to Ramlautan Chaudhary, Ward No. 17 Chairman, Bina’s husband, Romharshaji Kalathoki, is currently abroad in Malaysia and is expected to return on Monday. The post-mortem will be conducted after his arrival. Chaudhary emphasized the emotional shock of the mother, who was unaware of her elder son’s murder while she was in Kathmandu studying and residing in a hostel.

The news of her elder son's murder reportedly caused Bina to suffer a mental breakdown, and she could not cope with the grief, leading to her tragic death. Following her passing, her 11-year-old younger son, Shishir, has been taken in by his grandfather and is now in the care of relatives.

Basanta, who was studying in Kathmandu and seeking employment in France, had been staying at the hostel for the past 5-6 months, preparing for language exams and other pursuits. He frequently traveled between Kathmandu and Dang.

The police have detained two suspects, Pramit Patel of Kalaiya-3, Bara, aged 20, and Shekhar Yadav, aged 18, both residents of the same hostel, in connection with the murder. They allegedly attacked Basanta with a weapon, causing severe injuries to his head and neck, after which he was rushed to a hospital in Minbhawan, where he was declared dead.

While Shekhar Yadav was taken into custody in Kathmandu, Pramit Patel initially fled but was later arrested by Makwanpur police and brought to Kathmandu on Saturday. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
