Sep 01, Kathmandu - Law enforcement agencies have intensified security measures to control chaos-driven activities such as theft, looting, and fraud following the recent floods in Nepal. The police have successfully apprehended several individuals involved in these illegal activities from various locations.
A viral social media video showed individuals extracting gold ornaments and jewelry from a woman's body washed away by flooding into the Narayani River. Following an investigation, police arrested 25-year-old Madan Gurung from Madanpur, Chitwan, and 38-year-old Umesh Chaudhary. Authorities are continuing their investigations into their activities.
The police have emphasized that such opportunistic crimes targeting flood victims will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
Additionally, in Dhading's Galchhi Rural Municipality-4, suspects allegedly broke open a bank safe and looted cash amounting to over 92.68 lakh rupees, following the flooding along the Trishuli River. A total of 29 locals have been detained in connection with the incident.
In another case, a man named Shrijan Karki, 32, from Gokulganga-2, Ramechhap, was arrested for creating fake social media profiles in the name of flood victims to scam money via Facebook.
During a cleanup operation at Bareni Market in Ghalchhi-6, authorities discovered a 19-inch-long and 16-inch-wide safe buried under sand and mud. The safe has been secured at the Bareni police outpost.
Similarly, another safe was found unburied along the banks of the Trishuli River at Parewatar in Kathmandu, with efforts underway to retrieve it.
The police have reiterated that no criminal activities targeting flood-affected victims will be tolerated and are committed to maintaining law and order in these challenging times.
