Sep 04, Kathmandu - China has announced that it will continuously provide Nepal with emergency hydrological information regarding risks posed by glaciers and river obstructions.

According to the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu, the Ministry of Water Resources of China will share real-time data on hazards such as glacier breakages and obstructions to support rescue and disaster relief efforts in Nepal.

In a social media announcement, the embassy stated, “China will continuously supply emergency hydrological monitoring information, including risks related to glacier breaks and obstructions, to assist Nepal in rescue and disaster management activities.”

Additionally, China’s meteorological agencies have been providing Nepal with weather monitoring, forecasts, early warnings, and information on potential disaster impacts following the Bhotekoshi flood.

A spokesperson from the China Meteorological Administration explained in a press conference that, shortly after a severe landslide at the Ziring-Rasuwa border crossing, Chinese meteorological authorities advised Nepal’s weather department via video conference.

Since then, China has been offering technical meteorological support to aid ongoing rescue and relief operations in Nepal.

Particularly, sharing hydrological information about glacier breakages and river obstructions is expected to enhance disaster preparedness and response, given the increased risk of flooding and other hazards in affected areas.
