Sep 06, Kathmandu - Nepal’s recent devastating floods and landslides have positioned Prime Minister Balendra Shah to leverage the upcoming United Nations General Assembly as a vital platform to raise Nepal’s plight on the international stage. With climate change intensifying risks in the Himalayan region and directly impacting Nepal, Prime Minister Shah is expected to highlight these urgent issues to the global community.

Meanwhile, Japanese Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications Sanae Takaichi is also preparing to attend the UN General Assembly in New York at the end of September. This presents a potential opportunity for bilateral meetings or discussions between the two leaders. Notably, Prime Minister Shah and Minister Takaichi recently held a telephone conversation, during which Japan reaffirmed its commitment to support Nepal during this crisis.

In this context, Prime Minister Shah’s emphasis on Nepal’s climate crisis and the increasing disaster risks in the Himalayas could serve as a vital opportunity to garner international aid and advocate for climate justice. Japan appears eager to strengthen its role in peace, security, and international cooperation.

The high-level UN General Assembly is scheduled from September 22 to 28, providing Nepal a significant diplomatic platform to seek global support and highlight the urgent need for climate action and international solidarity.
