Sep 28, Kathmandu - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for stronger international pressure and sanctions on Russia, saying attacks continued in Kyiv and other regions, killing civilians, injuring dozens and damaging civilian infrastructure.

In a post on X on Sunday, Zelensky said Russian jet-powered drones struck two childcare centers, two schools, residential buildings, a vehicle repair shop, a warehouse and communications infrastructure in Kyiv. He said Russia had launched 277 attack drones since the previous day, including 155 jet-powered drones.

Zelensky added that damage was reported to a building used as the residence of Saudi Arabia’s ambassador in Kyiv, a sports school in Dnipro and a regional children’s home in Sumy. He described the attacks as “terrorism.”

Responding to claims that Moscow was seeking to de-escalate the conflict, Zelensky said such intentions would not be accompanied by a large-scale drone attack on Kyiv. He accused Russia of using diplomatic signals to delay the international response to the war.

Zelensky urged the United States to enforce its sanctions laws and called on international partners, including the G7 and G20, to increase pressure on Moscow. He said new sanctions packages were being prepared against Russian financial networks, supply chains providing materials and equipment for weapons production, and companies and individuals involved in ballistic missile manufacturing.

Meanwhile, Russia’s TASS news agency reported that Russian officials accused Ukrainian forces of shelling residential areas in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic 11 times over the past 24 hours. The report said two homes and two civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged, with no civilian casualties.

Russia’s Defense Ministry also claimed it had destroyed 43 Ukrainian drones over Russian regions and the Black Sea, and struck a telecommunications data center in Kyiv, a Nova Poshta logistics center in Odesa and a cargo ship carrying military equipment. These claims have not been independently verified.

After meeting Zelensky on September 26, U.S. President Donald Trump said both Russia and Ukraine wanted to resolve the war. Zelensky had earlier addressed the United Nations General Assembly on September 23, urging 46 countries, including India, to prevent their citizens from being drawn into the conflict through deception or other means.
