The United Nations Environment Program and its partner organization WRR have released the 'Food Waste Index Report-2021'. The report says that on the one hand, part of the world's population is struggling with hunger and on the other hand, millions of tons of food are being wasted.

Out of the total wasted food, 61 percent was wasted from home, 26 percent from foodservice and 13 percent from retail. According to one estimate, a truckload of wasted food equals 23 million trucks in an area of 40 tons.

According to the report, a citizen of the United States wastes about 59 kg of food every year. "If we are serious about avoiding crises such as climate change, damage to nature and biodiversity, and pollution, people around the world must stop wasting food," said Inger Addons, UNEP's executive director.

According to the report, 690 million people worldwide were affected by famine in 2019. That number is expected to rise further in 2020 due to Corona. The report covers retail outlets, restaurants, and food wasted at home. About 10 percent of the food consumed in a household is wasted.
